How to Set Up a Guest WiFi Network (and Why You Should)
Handing out your main WiFi password to every visitor, delivery person's device, or smart bulb you buy is a habit worth breaking. A guest network takes a few minutes to set up and solves both a convenience problem and a real security one.
Why It Actually Matters
Every device on your main network can, in principle, see and potentially reach every other device on it - your laptop, your NAS, your personal files. A guest network keeps visitors' devices and smart home gadgets (common attack targets, since many IoT devices have weaker security than a phone or laptop) off that same network entirely. If a guest's device or a compromised smart plug is ever an entry point, it has nowhere to go from an isolated guest network.
Setting It Up
- Open your router's app or web admin page (often something like 192.168.1.1 in a browser).
- Look for "Guest Network" or "Guest WiFi" under wireless settings - most routers from the last several years support this natively.
- Enable it and set a distinct network name (SSID) and password, separate from your main network.
- Confirm "client isolation" or "network isolation" is turned on - this is the setting that actually prevents guest devices from reaching your main network, not just a cosmetic separate name.
- If your router supports bandwidth limits for the guest network, consider setting one, so a guest's large download doesn't affect your own usage.
The isolation setting is the part that matters. A separate network name without isolation enabled doesn't actually protect your main devices - it just organizes connections. Always confirm isolation is on, not just that a guest SSID exists.
Confirming It Actually Works
Connect a device to the guest network, then run LAN Scanner from that device. If isolation is properly configured, it shouldn't be able to see your laptop, printer, or other main-network devices at all. If it can see them, isolation isn't actually enabled despite what the settings page might suggest - worth revisiting before trusting the guest network with anything.
What About Smart Home Devices?
