AirPort Utility Alternative

Apple confirmed it: AirPort Utility is being pulled from the App Store starting with iOS 27, and it's no longer guaranteed to work. If that's the app you've been using to manage an AirPort Extreme, Express, or Time Capsule, here's what's actually happening and what PingKit can and can't do about it.

AirPort Utility configured and managed Apple's own AirPort line of routers - hardware Apple discontinued back in 2018 but kept the management app alive for, until now. Apple's iOS 27 rollout removes it from the App Store, and even existing installs aren't guaranteed to keep working correctly. PingKit is not a router-configuration app and never was, so it's worth being upfront about what it does and doesn't replace here. We make PingKit, so weigh that accordingly.

If You're Still on AirPort Hardware

Between the app's removal and Apple separately dropping AFP protocol support (which Time Machine backups to an AirPort Time Capsule depend on), AirPort hardware is heading toward full incompatibility with current Apple software, not just losing its configuration app. If you haven't already, this is a reasonable moment to plan a replacement router - AirPort hardware has been discontinued for eight years, and official support is now actively ending rather than just quietly aging.

Where PingKit Fits In

PingKit doesn't configure any router, AirPort included - that was never its job. What it does help with is everything around a router swap: WiFi Analyzer to confirm your new router's coverage and channel selection are actually good, Speed Test to verify throughput matches or beats your old AirPort network, and LAN Scanner to see every device landing on the new network as you migrate them over one by one.

The honest recommendation: if you need to actually configure an AirPort base station, do it before iOS 27 if you haven't updated yet - PingKit won't help with that part. Once you've moved to a new router, PingKit is useful for confirming the new setup is actually working as well as the old one did.
