Why Does WiFi Disconnect When You Lock Your iPhone?
Lock the screen, and messages seem to pause until you unlock again. It feels exactly like WiFi dropped the moment your phone went to sleep - but in most cases, WiFi never actually disconnected. What changed is how much background activity iOS allows while the screen is off.
What Actually Happens When You Lock the Screen
iOS keeps the WiFi radio connected for a period after locking, but deliberately throttles background network activity to save battery - a tradeoff, not a malfunction. Individual apps get less frequent opportunity to refresh their data in the background, which is what usually produces the "nothing's coming through" feeling, even though the connection itself is often still technically active.
Why This Doesn't Affect All Notifications Equally
Push notifications - Messages, Mail, and most apps using Apple's push notification service - are delivered differently than a normal background refresh, and generally still arrive promptly on a locked screen. What's actually delayed is usually an app's own background sync (checking for new content, syncing data) rather than push-based alerts. Background App Refresh being disabled for a specific app, or Low Power Mode being active system-wide, both make this delay more noticeable.
Low Power Mode makes it more aggressive. It further limits background network activity to stretch battery life - a deliberate tradeoff. If the delay bothers you and battery isn't a concern, checking whether Low Power Mode is on is worth a look.
Telling Normal Behavior From an Actual Problem
If your phone reconnects and catches up within a few seconds of unlocking - messages arrive, apps refresh - that's expected background-power behavior, not a fault worth chasing. If the WiFi icon still shows disconnected after unlocking, or a Speed Test run immediately after waking the phone fails outright, that's a genuine connectivity issue, not just background throttling, and worth troubleshooting with our general triage guide.
If It's Genuinely Bothering You
- Check Settings → General → Background App Refresh is enabled for apps where the delay matters most.
- Confirm Low Power Mode isn't active if you don't need the battery savings.
- For time-sensitive apps, check their own notification settings - some offer a "time sensitive" notification category that bypasses some background restrictions.
